Who's On Board? 5 Questions to Ask Before Agreeing to Serve

As a minority strategic planning consultant and a former Executive Director, I have seen firsthand the importance of diversity and inclusion in the boardroom. There are also other considerations to be made for making the important decision of serving. Board members play a critical role in shaping the direction of an organization, and their decisions can have a significant impact on the communities they serve. If you are considering accepting a position on a board, there are a few key things you should understand before making your decision.

Number One: Mission

First and foremost, you should familiarize yourself with the organization's mission and values. It is essential to ensure that the organization's goals align with your personal values and beliefs. As a board member, you will be expected to make decisions that are in the best interest of the organization, and it is crucial that you are comfortable with the direction the organization is heading.

Number Two: Money

You should also understand the organization's financial situation. As a board member, you will be responsible for ensuring that the organization is financially stable and that its resources are being used efficiently. This includes reviewing financial statements and understanding the organization's revenue streams, expenses, and funding sources. It is also important to understand the organization's fundraising strategies and whether they are sustainable in the long term.

Number Three: Policies

Another key consideration is the organization's governance structure. This includes understanding the roles and responsibilities of board members, as well as the organization's bylaws and policies. You should also be aware of any conflicts of interest that may arise and how they will be addressed.

Number Four: DEI

Diversity and inclusion are also critical factors to consider. It is essential to ensure that the organization values diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment. I believe that diversity is not only the right thing to do but also a smart business decision. A diverse board brings different perspectives and experiences to the table, which can lead to better decision-making and more innovative solutions.

Number Five: Time

Finally, it is important to understand the time commitment involved in serving on a board. Board members are expected to attend meetings, participate in committees, and contribute their expertise and knowledge to the organization. It is important to ensure that you have the time and energy to fulfill your responsibilities as a board member effectively.

I encourage all potential board members to ask questions and ensure that their values and beliefs align with those of the organization. By doing so, we can work together to create a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
