The Only Constant is Change
I recently earned a Certified Professional Coaching Certification from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. This endeavor started over a year ago, and I pondered about making this huge time and financial investment for an entire year before starting it. I cannot begin to tell you how many changes I went through during this time – including starting my role here with The Spark Mill. To celebrate this achievement, I’d like to share one of iPEC’s foundational principles - “The only constant is change” - and how this principle supports our work as change management consultants.
iPEC explains this principle by stating, “All of us are immersed in change. It is empowering to realize that we are all living in a constant state of flux and that this is a normal process in life. Realizing this helps us accept change as a process in which we are involved, instead of trying to control that which we cannot.”
As a consultant and coach, I have worked with many organizations and individuals that are hesitant to change. When reflecting on this and reading this principle, I realize that to manage change effectively, one should focus on the path that leads you to the destination. Small steps and achievements are what make up that path. Sometimes the path deviates or becomes blocked, and you must adjust and refocus, but the result is still change. Focus on the present and “why” you are going in the direction you want to go in while appreciating the journey you are growing and learning through. The result is the ultimate change, but we are also changing through the process of getting there, and I think that is worth celebrating.
When it comes down to it, we are all constantly changing. It is impossible to stop it, but we can gain control by moving through it with intention and celebrating our successes along the way.
