Redefining Fundraising: Embracing Community-Centric Mindsets

During the 2024 Virginia Fund Raising Institute (VFRI) Conference, I gave a presentation on Community-Centric Fundraising alongside the 2023 Association of Fundraising Professional (AFP) Inclusive Fundraising Fellowship (IFF) cohort members. In my last blog, “Culture of Philanthropy – Addressing Harmful Practices in Fundraising,” I discussed insights from the fellowship that highlight impactful shifts needed within the fundraising profession and the non-profit sector. This presentation allowed the opportunity to facilitate a conversation and delve deeper into what shifting the culture actually looks like.

Throughout the presentation, it was clear that education must also include tangible takeaways for those who are moved to be change agents in their work. Key points made focused on mindset shifts necessary for driving systemic change:

Treating Donors as Partners

Treating donors as partners means seeing them as integral members of the community working together to achieve a common mission, rather than as sources of funds with control over the process. This approach emphasizes equitable relationships, transparency, and mutual respect, ensuring that donors understand their contributions are part of a collective effort. By aligning donor involvement with community goals, we foster a sense of shared responsibility and collaborative progress, where everyone plays a role in driving positive change.

Using Community-Based Vendors and Small Businesses

Incorporating the community into your practices can significantly enhance your fundraising efforts. For example, using local print shops for fundraising appeals, hiring caterers who share your organization’s values, or partnering with local small businesses for events. This not only supports the local economy but also strengthens community ties and demonstrates a commitment to shared values.

Using an Asset-Based Philanthropy Approach

An asset-based approach to philanthropy focuses on what the community already has, rather than what it lacks. Instead of framing communities as "underserved" or "needy," highlight their strengths, resources, and potential. This positive framing can empower communities and shift the narrative to one of resilience and capability.

Within community-centric fundraising, there are 10 principles. While these mindset shifts do not cover them all, it provides a great starting point as you embark on the journey of change.
